There's been varying numbers of Goldfinch coming to my Stretford backyard feeders lately, sometimes 15, 20 or just a couple but today numbers have increased (judging by the amount of Sunflower hearts eaten) and I saw the first newly fledged Goldfinch feeding itself. There's also been a tatty looking Dunnock constantly taking crumbled fat balls from my small front garden, before the pigeons or magpies eat it all. I've not seen any Blackbirds in the front Garden this year but something's been leaving empty snail shells.

Goldfinch fledged at least 2 young from their nest in the very large clump of bamboo in my Astley garden today, both bounced into the conservatory window and sat on the step but soon flew off into nearby Hawthorns with their parents. Also a Grey Wagtail over, odd given the time of year.
Bury . Much excitement today . First ever song thrush fledgling ! Later , tawny owl flushed from hedge by furious blackbirds .

Two good records for our Dukinfield garden this morning
First a Willow Warbler giving a brief song moved through quickly then about an hour later a Chiffchaff was an even briefer visitor. It's been a pretty good late winter early spring period for garden birds here, a male Blackcap was using the feeders during the recent cold snap. We have had up to 5 Siskins together at one time but I did see 4 female together and 3 males together so at least 7 different birds were visiting for about 2 weeks. A Redpoll was with them on one occasion, not seen any for at least 2 weeks. A female Great Spotted Woodpecker has been using the feeders recently as has a male a little less frequently, they were both in together earlier this week. Unusually we have been having regular visits from a pair of Bullfinch, I did notice another male with them the other day. Other notable sightings have been Goldcrest, 3 together, singing is often heard. 2 Mistle Thrush were actually on the grass in the morning half light a couple of weeks ago, very rare to see them down on the ground, a Song Thrush was another scarce visitor last week. Plenty of Goldfinch and Greenfinch with a couple of Chaffinch. Two different Nuthatch are still using the feeders but less regularly than earlier in the winter. Also had three sightings of Treecreeper during the early winter. I noticed an active Coal Tit nest, not in the garden but fairly close. Magpies have also been building a well hidden nest nearby. No sight or sound of Ring-necked Parakeets for at least 5 weeks. As I am typing I can hear a Chiffchaff in the distance and the male Woodpecker just landed our garden tree but was spooked, probably by my presence.

Just when I thought it was too late for this Winter to provide any surprises... a female pheasant strolled onto my front garden this morning. A garden first, although perhaps not too welcome. More seriously, whilst watching for ospreys from the back garden at 11.20, a very good candidate for a Goshawk was to the South-east of Romiley. After going South at first, it turned and came quite close, but it was not too low, and no other birds in the sky to compare size. It finally made off in a long glide to the North-East.
