Early start for me 7.45 - 10.30 am....No sign of the Green Sandpiper on the muddy stream, but in the adjacent field there was a pale morphed Buzzard mooching on the grass for worms.
l tried for the Lesser Spotted, but alas no joy near the Obelisk, so l went in search of the Green Woodies. Great and very close views (near the bench, by the two gates) in the usual place for them at the top of the park. As l walked back to the Obelisk, l could hear very clearly a LSW calling, this was along a 'main path' from the house up to the top of the park. Female Lesser spotted woodpecker by the obelisk this afternoon around 2.00pm-ish. It seemed to be favouring the dead trees at the back and left of the obelisk, quite vocal at times. I wandered off to look at the Green sandpiper, etc., the woodpecker was still around when I returned half an hour later. Also saw Green and Great spotted, so a three-woodpecker day! Beautiful pair of Grey wagtails by The Moat too.

Took my scope today to confirm or otherwise the identity of the two "Bean Geese" sp from yesterday evening and straight off the two distant geese present were clearly seen to be Pink-footed; just from their bill size and colour. I could not clearly see the bills on yesterday's birds but their legs in flight appeared orange coloured although that could have been a trick of the evening light. A closer look at the plummage of the birds this morning showed it to appear darkish like yesterday's birds, more brown than grey, but their legs were very pink These are possibly the two birds reported by Steve Burke earlier in the month.

Great afternoon in the park today - but could not believe how many people were there on a cold grey Monday. 3 buzzards over, plenty of great spot activity (at least 3 individuals drumming), nuthatches, tree creepers, and the usual tits and chaffinches. Herons very vocal and active in the herony. Star birds were the pair of green woodpeckers in the NE corner of the park on rabbit-grazed anthills - very well camouflaged. We watched them until they flew to a probable nest tree and disappeared. Later Mike spotted a green sandpiper on the muddy edges of the mill stream just outside the park. (View from the top of the stile). Tip - the park is much quieter from 3.30 onwards.

Phil start from in front of the house and walk up the main paved path with Smithy Pool to your left. You will pass a fenced-off area and two wood carvings - walk on about 100m and you will see the deer house to your left. The Green Woodpeckers feed on the ground in that area. As for other "prime birding areas" in the park just walk around and you will find many of the species as published on this thread. I tend to try to be there before the crowds arrive and always try to avoid weekends when birding.
To get yourself started the National Trust counter directly under the clock have free info leaflets with a park map included. Good luck.
