At noon after about 45 mins scoping from the towpath for the Wood Sand hoping it would show itself on the small areas of mudflat visible from there I decided to walk back to Dover Basin for a bit when a medium brown raptor with downwardly arched long wings and slow wing beats flew from a tree before banking over the Basin. Racing (well hobbling!) along to get a better view above the sliver birches I got it in the scope and the white belly, crown and dark eyestripe confirmed it was unmistakably an Osprey. It wheeled around the Basin pursued by crows and starlings before hovering with its talons extended ready to dive but another attack by crows saw it off in a northerly direction at 12.10pm. Wow! what a county tick! Only regret was that in my excitement I didn't think to try a record shot on my phone. Needless to say I also had a camera with me - buried in my rucksack of course.

Lightshaw and Dover Basin 19.00 21.00
Wood Sandpiper still present on Lightshaw Flash at 20.00 at little bit elusive but it eventually showed in the far left corner.
At 20.05 a bloke walked through the area between the fence and the flash and flushed all the (mostly unseen) godwits etc onto dover basin,24 at 20.30.
If anyone,s going to visit the site i,d politely suggest that they stick to the canal towpath and don,t venture into the fields, paths etc the views arn,t great and there,s little chance of a record shot but with a decent scope it,s tickable.
Finding the right spot can be daunting, park at the Dover Lock Pub,walk on the towpath towards pennington flash the first body of water (with a wire fence on the towpath) is dover basin next is a small pond (part of dover basin) then a field,Lightshaw is next and its hidden by the trees on the canal banking, there,s only one cleared viewing spot which does,nt give great views of the whole flash but it,s as good as you need.If you reach the canal bridge you,ve missed the spot ,throw a six and go back.
best of luck geoff

Hi Iain,
LHF is east of the A573 and is part of the Abram Flashes, not the Wigan Flashes LNR. The most straightfoward way to view the flash is to park at the Dover Lock Inn on the A573. Cross the road and walk south-east along the canal towpath. You will first pass a body of water on your right, known as Dover Basin (worth checking). Continue along the towpath and you will see LHF in the middle of the fields to your right, between Lightshaw Hall and the canal. LHF can also be viewed from Lightshaw Lane, but there is no parking here and the lane can only be accessed on foot. Also, the land-owner can be less than friendly if you stray from the path. Hope this helps...
PS a telescope is essential as views are fairly distant.

Hello, firstly, where exactly is LHF please, bit confused as the directions on the GM birding website suggest its located east of the A573 (north of lightshaw lane) but a web search stated that LHF is part of the wigan flashes complex.
If its the former, is lightshaw lane the best way of accessing the flash please?

First WBBS visit to my 4km stretch from Slag Lane swing bridge to the A58 at Bamfurlong. An incredible 7 Grasshopper Warblers, 6 singing and one in a bush about 6 ft away - these were the highlight of the 55 species recorded, which included Barn Owl, Black-tailed Godwit, Garden Warbler - but those Lesser Whitethroats known to be there were obstinately silent this morning! All the migrants warblers otherwise present in good numbers, looks like they've had a good winter in Africa.

Perhaps someone can do something for a site guide on the website then, no matter how brief? Such important information on this forum is pointless in the long run (and is not the place for it anyway) as give it a month or two and it is lost unless loads of other posts. Hence the site guides on the website. One of the regulars could surely knock something up or contact me and I'll do the main legwork if needs be.
