Barlow Tip this afto'
A Grasshopper Warbler ran across the main track right in front of me. It dived into the vegetation and reappeared on the track 5 mins. later carrying a large grub. After a good look round, it ran a few metres down the track and into some brambles. Great views of a bird I wasn't expecting to see.

Hi Ben, I had a peek at your Reed Bunting photo and see what you mean by its head pattern looking odd.
I think it's just a male in transitional plumage which has acquired its black ear coverts ahead of its solid crown pattern and still showing some supercilium behind the eye.
I had a look in the literature (Pica Press "Buntings and Sparrows" by Byers et alia), and noted on plate 15 the comment ..."in spring when part of the breeding plumage is acquired by moult and part by wear, unexpected patterns may occur." illustration 39c seems closest to your bird?

There was an interesting Bunting low down in the bushes by the edge of the lake yesterday - near the duck feeding area. I suppose it must be a Reed Bunting (same size), as they are quite common here, and I can't make it into anything else. Would be grateful for any thoughts re this - photo at link below. Thanks

Lovely walk around the lake, first time in a while.
Lots of mute swans some juvenile (assume last years) being aggressive Canada geese Coot Goldeneye think I counted 3 male 1 female doing the head nodding thing Several pairs of Great Crested Grebe some being aggressive Male & female Gadwall a first sighting for me Single Cormorant (another first for me)
Made up with a Buzzard sighting (managed a photo but not too sharp) I'm even sure there were 3 soaring really high Great tit Blue tit Flock of long tailed tits Heard nuthatch but didnt see it Lots of crows not sure what type Magpie Big flock of house sparrow at the visitor centre
Will be giving here a visit again soon.

Due to the close proximity of Alexandra Park, it's quite possibly one of the recently reported Firecrests there moving on due to the disturbance with tree felling etc perhaps?
