Hi Stuart, It's not unusual as it all depends from year to year on the conditions in Scandanavia (Norway, Finland, parts of Russia etc) ie. weather, berry crop, etc Last November there were already a fair few hundred in the country and a lot in Manchester near the City Centre and surrounding areas. It was particularly bad last year over there and a poorer than usual berry crop had been devoured that much more quickly so their instinct to roam mainly south brought a lot to the UK. However, that said, there may still be harsh winters but the berry crop is still substantial enough to support them so that they don't need to roam too far. It may well be the case this year that as Charles says, the berry crop is more than sufficient there so we may not see any this winter. Cheers Rob

I counted 60 in the usual place at Orrell Water Park today and I'm sure there were more. They were spooked by a Sparrowhawk twice, but returned after about 25 minutes on each occasion. The light wasn't great for photos most of the time, but at least I got some - you can't have too many Waxwing photos.
