Fairly large passage of Swifts and Sand Martins north across the reservoir at 10.30 this morning. Meadow Pipits calling with display flights and Reed Bunting calling. 5 adult and 1 Juvenile lesser Black Backed Gulls and 1 adult Herring Gull on the water. 1 larger raptor seen from the van which didn't look Buzzard like, but unable stop to check it out as I was approaching the reservoir.

Hi Sarfraz
I suggested a fox (for example) may have eaten one of the gulls, not killed it. My observation was simply that there were two dead gulls together - something I hadn't seen at this site before. Not raising alarm bells, just making a note.

Or perhaps the bird was just poorly Sarfraz as is the way with gulls feeding on stinking tips and the likes. There's usually plenty of dying birds as the weather heats up particularly with botulism and they are most obvious on stone-lined reservoirs. No need to cry foul play just yet.

Hi Steve
I saw a dead Lesser Black Backed Gull adult last year n probably a similar location. I doubt a Fox would have caught it or any other mammalian predator. It was not really consumed so possibility of foul play might exist?

I noticed the willow warbler singing in the few willows at the side of Edenfield Road a couple of days ago. If it's a migrant it's having a bit of a rest. May be in residence, which would be an interesting location.

On the South-western shore - 2 dead gulls. One was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, the other probably an immature Lesser Black-backed Gull. The latter was on its back and partially devoured, exposing pink flesh and sternum - perhaps after a fox or Great Black-backed Gull had eaten it? Both corpses seemed fresh. Impossible to say if there has been any foul play, but can't help wondering if someone has been taking pot-shots as gulls have drifted on to the reservoir from the South. Note: the corpses couldn't be seen closely because of the perimeter wall.
