5th July 3:05pm - 4:05pm highlights: territorial display between two pairs of buzzards, one adult bird calling from the cricket pitch while its mate circled around the other pair until they drifted back over the motorway; four young grey partridges very fluffy but capable of flight; singing lesser whitethroat on East of the rise.

From 1 pm today - Eastern corner behind the basket ball court . Blackcap -1 m + 1f seen several times. Robin -1 . Blackbird - 4. Song thrush 1 singing several times. Buzzard - 1. Wren - 1 Goldfinch 3. Blue - tit - family of 3.
Elsewhere , very quiet apart from - Kestrel - 2 (1 adult and 1juvenile ). Whitethroat - 1 not singing.
Goldfinch flock - c40 ( feeding on knapweed and thistle seed).

Afternoon wander, highlights: three swallows low overhead; great tits, robins and dunnocks have flying young in tow, at least one whitethroat visiting nest; a single stock doves over. The only raptor was a female sparrowhawk.

Highlight of this morning's visit was a Red Kite that drifted over, heading east. (Record shot attached.)
Also, at least 2 Sedge Warblers singing near the summit, and a single Herring Gull with 21 Lesser Black-backed on the cricket pitch.
Swift - 8. House martin - 2. Blackbird - 7. Carrion Crows - 2. Collard dove - 1. Buzzard -1 over. Kestrel - 1 hunting. House sparrow - 3. Lesser Black-back gull -1 over. Dunnock -1. Jackdaw -2. Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Whitethroat all heard as I was leaving at 7pm.

Afternoon stroll 2:50 - 3:40 A young buzzard flew low over the trees by Newcroft Road. Plenty of calling chiffchaffs, just the one whitethroat heard near the top of the rise. A mixed flock of about three dozen goldfinches and half a dozen linnets on the thistles on the bank leading down to the cycleway that used to be a footpath.

Midday. Common Whitethroats, Greenfinch, Kestrel, Reed Bunting, 3 x Swallows, 3 x House Martin swooping a foot over the flood puddle, 2 x Swift, 1 x Raven over. 1 x Sedge Warbler showing and singing very well in the SE of the meadow. But no sight nor sound of the Lesser Whitethroat.

Thanks to Tim W and Pete H for the specific location of the Lesser Whitethroat which I heard then saw immediately as I approached the summit. Several more sightings, albeit brief, as it flitted from tree to tree for 3 hours, constantly singing on this hot sunny afternoon. It seems to have a large territory. This is one shy, secretive bird.
