As I was walking home from Humphrey Park Station just now there was a commotion amongst the jackdaws, woodpigeons and starlings on Lostock School's playing field. I looked around for the usual sparrowhawk and found a male peregrine instead. Having scattered the birds he did a handbrake turn around one of the rooftops and steamed off towards the Trafford Centre.

Also saw one of the Booth road/wellington crescent Tawny Owls on Sunday night, the house of which it was perched on aptly has a photo of an owl stuck to the window. Wonder if the owners have seen it! No sign of any tonight after a brief evening dog walk round the block at 23:45
Two tawny owls - one initially heard calling on Booth Road in Old Trafford yesterday evening. It was perched on one of the higher rungs of a telegraph pole, then flew to a nearby chimney, closely followed by another. Have heard them around here before but this is the first time I've seen them.

Over the weekend I've been looking at my records for the past few years for the Greater Manchester area and I've found that in November for most years there's a slump in how often I'm seeing woodpigeons. Most of the year woodpigeons are the most-seen birds, in November they're third or fourth. This year it's been conspicuous because when I have been seeing them I've not seen many at a time and locally I've not been seeing them at all. I won't bore you with the details but my general conclusion is that I've got to stop thinking of our local woodpigeons as a resident population augmented by Winter visitors and instead think of them as migrants with a breeding population and a Wintering population, like the local starlings, blackcaps and chiffchaffs.

Seen on a short visit to Nansen street park,Gorse Hill, Stretford late this afternoon .
I'd noticed that, usually when I'm ongoing by there's a few round the park and nearly always a couple feeding on the grass by the flats opposite the Gorse Hill. I never thought I'd be missing woodpigeons.

I've not seen any woodpigeon around Gorse Hill, Stretford for a good while , confirmed by my neighbour Sue a non- birder but she has got bird feeders (for blackbirds, robins and wrens) front and back of her terraced house which the woodpigeons empty .

After an absence of the best part of a month I've seen the first couple of woodpigeons in our bit of Stretford this lunchtime. Evidently I've been wrong in thinking our local population is largely sedentary and augmented by Winter visitors, they must have been among the tens of thousands that steamed through the region this Autumn while the Winter visitors hung back feeling no pressure to move on while the weather was unseasonably mild.

So glad you've brought this up Steven as I've had half a dozen permanently on the feeders for months & then suddenly for about the past 2 weeks have gone missing. There are farmers fields only a couple of hundred yards away which like you I was thinking was responsible for their absence. A usual 2 day fill up of the feeders has now become a twice a week fill up so something is responsible.
